Time Capsule impressions so far

I got a Time Capsule recently, so I thought I’d post my impressions.

First, the good. It’s pretty. Setup is easy. I did the firmware update, because you’re supposed to do it. That was easy also. I did this before really starting to use it, just in case. Connecting USB disks and sharing them works well.

Now the bad. I’ve been using Time Machine for backups since January. I was disappointed that I couldn’t continue using those old backups and instead had to start all over. Now I can only restore as far back as yesterday. Also disappointed with the network performance so far. Even wired, I only get about 1.5mb download, on a circuit that’s supposed to be 10mb. Perhaps it’s something with the ISP. The initial backup took forever, even on the wired network, but that’s expected. I’d hate to see what it’s like via wireless. The unit does 802.11n networking, as does my laptop. But my brand new iPhone 3G does 802.11g at best. And I’m told that if an 802.11n network has any 802.11g clients, you lose the benefit of the 802.11n and it’s slower. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

Speaking of the iPhone, I noticed annother annoyance in it’s Mail client. The Mail setting sync failed to sync my out going mail server settings properly, so I had to set that up manually on the phone.

You’d think from the stuff I buy I was an Apple fanboy, but I’m not and I’m really not feeling like one today.
